Every island in Greece has its own distinct charm. But they all share iconic white-washed towns and stunning turquoise waters, which make for a few common rules to follow when packing for a trip. You’ll blend in (or stand out!) perfectly with the picturesque surroundings by using this packing list for what to wear in the Greek islands.
There are so many amazing Greek islands that it’s hard to know where to visit. My three favorites are Mykonos, Santorini, and Skyros, but they share the same general feel as other islands like Paros, Ios, and Kefalonia. All of the islands have a laid back, casual bohemian vibe – even at the clubs – so keep that in mind when planning your wardrobe.
It’s best to visit Greece from May through October, so the 12 essentials below are perfect for warm days and cooler nights. And if you’re going to be in Mykonos, be sure to check out my suggested beach club attire in my Mykonos travel guide.

(1) Blue & white stripes
If you’re trying to figure out what to wear in the Greek islands, blue & white clothing is an obvious first choice. I have a pair of linen high-waisted striped pants I actually purchased in Paros, but you can work stripes into just about any item of clothing.
(2) White midi dresses
The Greek islands can get very hot during the day, but cool down at night with strong winds. Longer dresses are the perfect blend of form & function, and a crisp white is the perfect contrast against those gorgeous island sunsets. Since I’m on the shorter side (5’2”) I prefer midi dresses vs. maxi dresses, and they’re also a more up-to-date silhouette.
(3) Wide-leg linen pants
Linen is the perfect material for Greece, since it’s breezy and keeps you from sweating. I always pack a pair of wide-leg linen pants in a color that coordinates with my other items – usually white, beige, or light blue. They pair perfectly with a simple white crop top.
(4) A light cardigan
As I mentioned, it can be quite cool and windy in the evenings, so make sure you remember to pack a light cardigan like this one. It’s also perfect to wear with your linen pants or midi dress if you plan to visit a monastery, since you’ll need to cover your knees and shoulders. I suggest a white or beige, so that it will coordinate with the majority of your outfits.
(5) Bold orange dresses
Everyone tends to pack a blue & white wardrobe, but I also love the contrast of a bright orange dress with the blue domes. It’s a more bold choice, but makes for great photos.
(6) A white bikini
Most days you’ll (hopefully) be wearing a swimsui, and I love a classic white bikini. It looks great against the blue Mediterranean water, and it’s one of those versatile items that everyone should own. Montce is my favorite swimsuit brand, but I’ve also found a few awesome affordable & high-end options below.
(7) A black plunge one-piece
I included black plunge one-pieces in my first summer swimsuit guide, and they’re perfect to wear in the Greek islands if you want to feel chic. Black is a flattering color for everyone, and it will fit in well at the upscale beach clubs in Mykonos or by the pools in Santorini.
(8) A statement cover up
Since you’ll be wearing swimsuits most days, you’ll also need some good cover ups. I prefer white cover ups with a statement detail, like lace or fringe, or cover ups with bold blue & white patterns. I suggest getting something more inexpensive since it will end up at the bottom of your beach bag.
(9) Flat sandals and (optional) neutral wedges
You may be tempted to pack some wedges (and I usually do), but make sure they’re comfortable and easy to balance in. I’m partial to Soludos, but I think sandal/open toe styles work better in the Greek Islands.
Wedges are optional, but a pair of comfortable flat sandals are essential. It’s difficult to get taxis and most roads & paths are cobblestone, so you’ll need something easy to walk in. I prefer tan or light brown, since it goes with just about everything. While you’re on the islands, also be sure to pick up a pair of handmade Greek leather sandals – they’re inexpensive and unique. I include my favorite sandal spots in Santorini in my travel guide.
(10) A cross-body bag
A cross-body bag is a must when packing for the Greek islands! There can be some unsavory elements in touristy spots, and this style is perfect for discouraging pickpockets. Again, I like a tan or light brown that will coordinate with my sandals. These rattan styles (made popular in Bali markets) are good options, but anything with a leather-like strap is a good choice.
(11) A sun hat
A hat is essential for Greece. Not only will it protect your face, but it’s also a great accessory in photos. I prefer a structured (but flexible) wide brim in a tan color, with a white, blue, or black band. Hats are also available at all of the mini-markets and shops, but they’re usually over-priced and lower-quality so I recommend packing your own.
(12) Minimalist gold jewelry
You’ll definitely be able to pick up some traditional evil-eye jewelry at the local shops (I explain why jewelry featuring eyes is so popular in Greece here) but bring some jewelry to layer for the evenings. I prefer gold in Greece because it glitters & looks gorgeous during sunsets. As I mentioned the vibe is more laid back so simple / minimal pieces are best.
Non-fashion essentials
And just a bonus since this is a complete packing list, here are some non-fashion essentials that you’ll need for your trip to the Greek islands.
- Sunscreen: No one likes a sunburn – and no one likes wrinkles. I prefer high-SPF French brands, like this one from La Roche Posay available on Amazon.
- Mosquito repellant bracelet: The mosquitos come out at night on the islands, so pack a bracelet like this one. It’s easier than spray, and you can also wear it on your ankle under dresses and pants.
- A lightweight cotton beach towel: A lot of the more casual beach lounge spots don’t provide towels, so it’s smart to bring your own. These lightweight cotton towels are easy to pack and fast-drying.
- Motion sickness bracelet: A ferry is the easiest way to get from island to island, so if you’re planning to island-hop I highly recommend packing a motion-sickness bracelet.
- (Optional) a pashmina or wrap: As I mentioned if you’re planning to visit a monastery, try to wear your linen pants or midi dress and a cardigan. If you are not covered up correctly, they may give you something to wear. And I’m not sure about you… but I always prefer wearing my own clothes. However, if you’re wearing something shorter or that leaves your shoulders uncovered, you can also bring a pashmina to cover up for the visit.
And that’s it for my packing list on what to wear in the Greek islands! I’d love to know if you’re planning a trip, so let me know if the comments below. And if you’re looking for some more travel inspiration, check out my Instagram story highlights at @mercedesconstantine.
