When I first moved to Amsterdam, I noticed all the women wore white sneakers. It didn’t matter whether they were wearing a dress or jeans – they always had their sneakers! And not the dirty beat up kind you probably have in the back of your closet. These ones are pristine white, despite all of Dutch rain and the walking we do in the city.
We ride our bikes everywhere and there are old cobblestone streets in the city, so sneakers make sense. But I realized that this wasn’t just another example of the Dutch being practical (which they are when it comes to everything). This is actually a widespread European fashion trend that has been gaining momentum over the past couple of years, and is definitely here to stay. So what is the this Dutch fashion trend all about, and how do you wear it? Read below for all of the details and my favorite picks.
Mercedes
There are many types of sneakers, and even more ways to style them. My three favorite styles are Athletic (think an upleveled version of something you could go for a run in), high top (a more durable canvas option is ideal, like Converse), and leather court (a low top you could wear playing tennis – my favorite and definitely the most chic!).
Athletic
The 90’s are back more than ever, and the athletic sneaker is one of the top trends this year. Brands like Adidas, Nike, and Reebok are bringing back classic styles like the ones below. Pastels like these are also all the rage, but if you’re going to invest I recommend an all-white pair.
High top
Converse are a classic example of high top style, but anything unfussy in a higher ankle silhouette would work. It’s a little harder to wear (especially if you’re short like me), but has more of a vintage 1980’s look.
Leather court
The classic version of the tennis court style is the Adidas Stan Smith, first introduced in the 1970’s. This is one of my favorite styles, and it can be found at all price points from low-end to designer. I love the all leather versions, like my favorites from Saint Laurent (EU link).
How to wear it
My three favorite ways to style my white sneakers are either (1) with cuffed wide leg jeans, (2 )with a mini sundress and a leather or jean jacket, and (3) with a silk midi skirt and fitted top. Here are some examples of for style inspiration – and make sure to tag me on Instagram so I can see how you’ve styled these!
