Summer is finally in full swing! Well… for most of the world anyway. Those of us in the UK and the Nordic countries are still getting a ton of rain. It’s not even supposed to break 22C/70F next week, which is pretty bizarre to this California native for mid-July.
That being said, Jimmy & I were able to travel to the south of France this month (we started with Marseille – more travel guides coming!) and we spent as much time as possible in our bathing suits. So while I’ll be spending the next month in the weird weather of the Netherlands wishing for a slim ray of sunlight… I’m hoping all of you in warmer regions are enjoying time outside.
Whether you’re near the ocean or just hanging out in your backyard, I put together this list of the best swimsuit trends for 2020 that are perfect for your summer plans. And if you’re looking for some ideas on more than just swimsuits, check out my summer style guide.

If you’re feeling sophisticated: plunge one-pieces
A one-piece can sometimes be a bit too boring for me, but a plunge adds a sexy edge while still staying classic. Think Brigitte Bardot or Marilyn Monroe.
The Brazillian brand Haight is one of my favorite brands for one-pieces, because their silhouettes are absolutely classic. They are a splurge, but you can get great ones on sale and the fabric quality is amazing. If you’re not sure if this style is for you but still want to try it, Asos has a ton of great affordable options! But make sure to go with a classic black to avoid being too over the top. In addition to the suits below, I also found this cute ruffle option from Avec Les Filles at a huge discount on Amazon (with Prime delivery!).

If you’re feeling romantic: ruffles
When I first imagine ruffles on swimsuits, I picture the ruffle bottoms I had as a 2 year old… but I promise this is a grown-up look you’ll love. The key is selecting an interesting color or pattern to offset the “cute” factor. In addition to the options below, H&M has some cute flounce bottoms available in Europe (EU link).

If you’re feeling trendy: animal print
Honestly – I have been on the hunt for a flattering pair of leopard high-waist bottoms for a year. I still haven’t found the perfect pair for my short frame, but I do love these from Montce and all of the options below.
Just be sure to avoid an entire animal print bathing suit. To keep it a little more sophisticated pair a print bottom with a black bandeau top, or pair a print top with a black high-waisted bottom (rather than the matching print).

If you’re feeling classic: stripes
I love the pale blue stripes that have been everywhere at H&M (very French Riviera). But my absolute favorite brand Montce has a canary yellow striped swimsuit collection that I’m obsessed with. It’s pricey but the quality is fantastic – everything I own from this brand has lasted years.

If you’re feeling bold: colorblock
I’m not a huge fan of colorblocking on the same swimsuit (it feels a little too Miami Beach for me). But I almost never wear the same solid color top & bottom.
I think this mix & match trend looks best with high-waisted bottoms & a bandeau top. I adore these lilac blue lace tie bottoms from H&M, and in France I paired them with a basic white bandeau top (strangely from A&F of all places). They also have a black version of the bottoms ( I just ordered! EU link here) which would be really cute with a mint green or pale pink top.
