Tomorrow is the first day of spring! It’s the season change I most look forward to, now that I live in Amsterdam. Spring means I’ll see the sun on a regular basis, the tulips will be in full bloom around the city, and we can finally sit outside along the canals. And this year is extra special, because spring will (hopefully) bring an end to the restrictive lockdown we’ve had for 6 months. For me, the best way to celebrate this change is a refresh of my wardrobe (which is mainly leggings & loungewear currently). The 90’s super model look is back – but with a focus on comfort, and way more flattering interpretations of older styles. These are the 5 best spring 2021 fashion trends that I’ll be wearing this season.

#1 Bright colors vs. neutrals
I will always be a fan of #beigeaesthetic, so neutrals still have a place in my spring wardrobe. But it’s been a drab year, and we need some color in our lives. Think happy Easter colors; pink, yellow, periwinkle, and lavender. My advice to make this trend more wearable is to pick a color that works with your style and skintone. Bubblegum pink & lavender will be popular choices, but I can never quite pull those off – so my favorite for spring is periwinkle.

#2 Wide leg jeans vs. skinny jeans
This one has been coming for a while (and might be painful for anyone over the age 25), but it’s time to invest in some wide leg jeans. I’ve been a skinny-jean side-parter for at least two decades, so it was difficult for me too. But there are some affordable & suprisingly flattering styles out there – even if you’re petite! After trying a dozen different pairs from multiple retailers, I fell in love with these flattering wide leg jeans (US link for a similar pair). Bonus if you find a pair that’s ripped and vintage – and even better if you can find an actual vintage pair from the 90s.

#3 Menswear vs. lounge sets
Don’t get me wrong – I love my loungewear. But the world is about to change for the better, and it’s time to start wearing real clothes. That doesn’t mean you need to be uncomfortable however. Leaning into baggier, menswear items and pairing them with comfortable staples (like a long sleeve crop top or a basic turtleneck) keep this trend simple and wearable.

#4 Garden party prints vs. plaids
It really has been a rough year, and bright colors might not be enough. So the fashion world is also delivering on our craving for a mood shift by bringing us cheerful garden party prints. Think romantic 90’s spring florals, but in bigger, bolder styles. And you can expect to see the puff sleeve trend from last fall returning as well. In my opinion this is the best spring 2021 fashion trend, and the one I’m most excited about. I’ll definitely be keeping my fall plaid blazer in the wings for spring, but I’m planning to invest in some of the gorgeous floral dresses below.

#5 Baseball caps vs. bucket hats
In my opinion, a lot of trends are not worth jumping on the bandwagon for – and bucket hats were one of them. Luckily they’re starting to be replaced by the much more wearable baseball cap. And it looks great paired with a blazer and wide leg jeans, if you want to catch a few trends in one outfit.
