xx,
Mercedes
Since I used to snowboard in my high school days, I (very unwisely) thought skiing would be easy to learn in my 30’s. Unfortunately I ended up spraining my knee on the first day, but I still had an absolute blast on the trip. I skipped the snow sports altogether and hit the apres-ski scene instead. There’s nothing better than relaxing with a drink in hand and good company, and St. Anton has something for every type of après skier.
But first – what is après ski?
Après Ski (n.): The art of turning a day on the slopes into an afternoon of alpine euphoria. Après ski is the magical transformation that occurs when slopeside adrenaline gives way to hot cocoa, cool cocktails, and epic beats. Essentially, it’s the joyful reward for surviving icy winds and conquering the mountain.
Best après ski spots
Krazy Kanguruh
This is a popular après ski bar, and for good reason. With its lively atmosphere, DJ, and unbeatable location right on the slopes, Krazy Kanguruh is the place to be for a fun-filled après ski experience. Order a beer or cocktail and dance the night away! Pro tip: try the Glühwein (mulled wine) for a warm, spicy treat.
Mooserwirt
Mooserwirt is St. Anton’s most iconic après ski spot, known for its retro DJs and upbeat vibe. Located at the bottom of the slopes, it’s easy to ski right up to the bar and join the party. Or you can easily take the bus, and it’s a short walk to the bar. The drinks are strong, the atmosphere is electric, and the memories are unforgettable. Pro tip: have their famous Hot Widow cocktail!
Heustadl
Heustadl offers eclectic beats with a mixed menu of Alpine dishes and classic cocktail fare. With live music and a disco ball, it’s the spot where après ski gets its groove on. Pro tip: go for an Aperol Spritz, which are (surprisingly) just as good in the snow as they are by the ocean.
Basecamp
Basecamp is a great option for those looking for a more upscale après ski experience. This chic bar offers a wide range of premium cocktails, as well as a delicious food menu. With its stylish decor and sophisticated vibe, Basecamp is the perfect spot for a post-ski drink. Pro tip: go for a classic glass of bubbles or a St. Germain cocktail.
Arlberg WellCom
So this one is not a traditional après spot… but after all that partying (and maybe a little skiing), you probably want some R&R. St. Anton has a few spas and wellness centers, including the award-winning Arlberg-well.com. I visited this spa with my girlfriends, and indulged in a sports massage and a swim. This one is perfect if you’re feeling like your liver needs a recovery day; you’ll leave feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to do it all over again tomorrow.
A few bonus tips…
Where to stay
We stayed at this fantastic 4 bedroom Airbnb, which had it’s own sauna and private massage room. It’s perfect for four couples or a big group of friends, since each bedroom has it’s own bathroom. It was just a short walk or bus to the center of town, but if you want to stay a little closer in I recommend the Himmlhof Hotel. It’s in an old farmhouse, and will still give you that cozy cabin vibe.
Where to eat
Museum Restaurant
Located right in the heart of St. Anton, the Museum Restaurant is a must-visit for foodies. Their menu offers both traditional Austrian dishes and international favorites, served up in a majestic but cozy atmosphere. This was my favorite restaurant in St. Anton and a place I would love to visit again on my next trip. The service is fantastic, and I recommend trying any of their risottos or pork dishes.
Sennhütte
If you’re looking for something a little more buttoned down and casual, head to Sennhütte. This rustic restaurant is located right on the slopes, so you can ski up for a quick bite or sit outside and enjoy the stunning views. Their menu features hearty Alpine specialties like schnitzel and fondue, and the lively atmosphere will keep you coming back for more.
Verwallstube
It’s a bit spendy, but Verwallstube is a Michelin-quality restaurant with an impressive wine list. At 2,085 meters above sea level, it’s one of the highest located gourmet restaurants in Europe and offers incredible views.
What to wear
When it comes to fashion in St. Anton, the key is balancing style with function. Think colorful ski jackets, fur-lined boots, and cozy knit hats. For après ski, it’s all about looking stylish while still being able to move and dance. Opt for cute ski pants paired with a fitted sweater or thick knit crop top, and finish off the look with a statement coat or jacket. And don’t be afraid of a vintage 80’s ski resort vibe with some neon colors and bold patterns.
Puffy jacket: You’re gonna need a warm jacket, and puffy ones are both practical and stylish. Opt for a bright color or shiny black to stand out on the slopes, or a classic chic beige.
Thermal or fleece-lined leggings: Regular leggings usually don’t cut it in the cold, unless your visiting in early spring. Make sure your leggings hold heat, or are fleece-lined for extra warmth. I recently fell in love with these Vuori leggings. Since I went in March, I was actually able to wear my favorite high-waisted compressive workout leggings.
Waterproof boots: Wet feet are the worst, so make sure your boots are waterproof and insulated. This is especially crucial at outdoor bars, where you’ll encounter a lot of melted snow and spilled drinks.
Beanies and earmuffs: Keep your head warm and stylish with a cute beanie! I love the look of earmuffs too, but they aren’t as warm so I’d recommend them for a shoulder season trip (early spring or late fall).
Hand warmers: Keep your hands toasty with some hand warmers – they’re a lifesaver on those extra chilly days. These disposable ones are perfect for ski trips, and can also be used in your boots. If you want something more sustainable, I also like these rechargeable versions.
Fun accessories: The après scene is all about having fun, so you can go wild with your accessories! Add a pop of color with some bright gloves or a funky hat, or get a coordinated item with your friend group. The guys in my travel group all got these fun 80’s style windbreakers, and the girls all got different versions of this metallic fanny pack. After all, you’re in St. Anton to have a good time!
No matter where you choose to go for après ski drinking in St. Anton, one thing is for sure – you’re in for an unforgettable time. And remember – just because you’re not skiing, doesn’t mean you can’t partake in the legendary après ski scene in St. Anton. Cheers to a great day on the slopes, and an even better night of drinks and memories.
slay the après!
