Paris is an incredible city at any time of year. The spring cherry blossoms in the jardins, picnicking under the Eiffel Tower in the summer, seeing the leaves change in the fall, and celebrating winter holidays in the city of lights… I love every season in Paris equally. But Paris is also an intimidating city, with tons of unique neighborhoods (or “arrondissements“) that each have their own mood. Deciding where to stay can be quite an overwhelming task. So having recently stayed at one of the most famous hotels in Paris, I wanted to share my unbiased experience. Read on for an honest review of the Shangri-la Hotel in Paris.

Before I kick off this review, a quick note that I was not compensated in any way – this is an honest review, and 100% my unpaid opinion.
I have mixed feelings about the Shangri-la Hotel – there are several reasons why this hotel is fantastic, and several reasons why it may not be worth it. Read on to find out if this is the right hotel for your trip to Paris.
First – who is this hotel meant for?
- Couples – you’ll love the romantic decor.
- Luxury lovers – you’ll love the 5 star service and spa.
- First time visitors to the city – you’ll love the location.
- Single travelers with a big budget – you’ll love the views from the terrace rooms.
AND Who should avoid this hotel?
- Families – the formality of the hotel might not be enjoyable for young children.
- Travelers with limited budgets – this is a luxury hotel, which comes with a big price tag.
- People who know Paris well – the location can be quite touristy.
- Longer term stays – the rooms are pricey, so it’s difficult to book for long stays.
why is this hotel worth it?
As I mentioned above, the Shangri-la is one of the most well-known hotels in Paris – and it’s also one of the most expensive. You can expect to spend anywhere from $800 – $2,000 USD per night for a basic room. So why would this price be worth it?
THE SERVICE
As to be expected, the service was incredible – beginning with the impeccable door staff. The private check-in desk was a nice way to start the stay, and everyone at the hotel made me feel welcome. They also go above and beyond fulfilling special requests, like additional water bottles or foam pillows.
THE LOCATION
I usually prefer to stay in other areas of the city that are less touristy. However, this location is perfect for someone new to Paris.
The Shangri-la is located quite centrally, within a 15 minute walk of both the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The Sacré-Cœur (in my favorite neighborhood!) is also just a short 35 minute metro ride away. I’ll be writing a more detailed Paris travel guide in the future, but until then, trust me – this hotel is in a great location if you want to be close to the city’s main attractions.
AMENITIES
One of the things I always look for in a hotel is great amenities. Although the Shangri-la could have better common areas with views of the Eiffel Tower (see my note in the Common Areas section below), the lobby bar La Botaniste has a fantastic cocktail menu and a classic vintage vibe. The spa, gym, and pool are also amazing.
THE BREAKFAST
The Shangri-la was the best room service breakfast I’ve EVER had! They offer a few different options, but if you’re willing to splurge, go for the Bauhinia Breakfast. Between the bread basket filled with pastries, the yogurt & fruit, and the main dish of eggs, it’s really enough food for two. It’s a perfect way to start the morning if you’re a couple, or if you just want to treat yourself.
what could be better?
THE COMMON AREAS
The Shangri-la is in a great location for first time visitors to Paris, since it’s very central. But most hotels in this area (especially at this price point) offer a roof terrace or dining option with a view of the Eiffel Tower, while the Shangri-la does not. This is particularly important as hotel guests will often have the first opportunity to book a table – and reservations at these rooftops get booked up weeks (or months) in advance.
I was fairly disappointed in that regard, especially considering I had opted for a basic room with no view. They do have photos of a roof terrace on their website, but it was not available when I inquired at the hotel. If this is important to you, I would recommend passing on this hotel and staying elsewhere.
EXTRAS
I love when hotels have extras available to their guests – things like free car rentals, or experiences you can book. Like most luxury hotels, the Shangri-la will be able to book anything for you through their concierge service. And it does look like they have a private boat! However, many five-star hotels offer incredible experiences (like my favorite hotel in Ireland). The Shangri-la could do a better job of creating custom offerings, and advertising them on the website or reaching out to guests.
THE ROOMS
The basic rooms at the Shangri-la are nicely renovated and clean, with simple traditional decor. The bathroom has a fantastic tub, and the toiletry amenities are Guerlain. However, at average rates of over $1,000 per night, I would expect more from a basic room. I was pretty dissapointed in the view – mine was a concrete wall, which wasn’t ideal.
If you’re traveling for a special occasion though, the terrace Eiffel rooms are gorgeous. And if you’re really celebrating with a splurge – I recommend the La Suite Gustave Eiffel which offers incredible views from a private terrace.
tips for booking
I hope you enjoy your trip to Paris! If you choose to reserve a room at the Shangri-la, here are a few extra tips to make the most of your stay.
GETTING THERE
Depending on how you arrive in Paris, getting an Uber or a taxi is probably your best option. The Shangri-la is also 30 minutes by metro from Gare du Nord, if you’re feeling adventurous.
FINDING THE BEST RATE
I prefer to book through my credit card travel partners, so I can maximize benefits and points. American Express has the best offer through their travel site, since this is a premium hotel & resort. That means early check-in, room upgrades, dining credits, and late check-out. If you don’t have a travel credit card, booking directly through the hotel is a good choice as they have special packages and rates.
EMAILING AHEAD FOR EXTRAS
As I mentioned above, the staff is really helpful and responsive. If you have any requests like early check-in or special items, call or email ahead for those as well. That way everything will be in your room upon arrival.
